Snow Boarding, Ruapehu, North Island
There is a large concentration of commercial Heli-skiing fields available in the Queenstown and Wanaka regions.
These fields are among the most popular locations for your ski, heliski, or snow board experience in NZ.
The Remarkables Range and Coronet Peak can be accessed for heliskiing from Queenstown.
Other ski fields such as Treble Cone, Cardrona, and the Waiorau Nordic Ski Area are located in the Wanaka region.
Although the there is a bigger range of suitable snow fields in this area of the South Island than there are in the North Island due to the Southern Alps, you may find some of the prices may also be more expensive.
If your budget is a bit tighter, you should consider looking at less expensive fields that are growing in popularity on other regions.
Mt Aspiring and the Mt Cook Mackenzie region of the Alps is also host to commercial heli-skiing operations if you want to compare prices.
Canterbury is also a South Island region with back country heliskiing that has at least two companies providing heliski services.
In the North Island, Mount Ruapehu and the region of the Tongariro National Park is host to some of the finest heliski facilities and worth investigating for the main season from July to October. The main commercial ski fields are at Whakapapa and Turoa, located on the active volcano Mount Ruapehu. There are world-class facilities, excellent accommodation, and other activities in the region, as well as some great Ski clubs.
The season for New Zealand heli skiing is running at the opposite time of year to those in the Northern Hemisphere and therefore are ideal for visitors from that part of the world.
The NZ ski season begins around the beginning of July and runs through to early October. The season can extend past October and this was what happened when I visited Mount Ruapehu, Whakapapa and Turoa, in late October. It was snowing on the ski fields in the Tongariro National Park and that provided an opportunity before the season ended for the year.
If the success of your holiday experience absolutely depends on an abundance of snow, I recommend you make sure you book for the main ski season between July and September to avoid disappointment.
I would also suggest you check your dates against the public and school holiday dates if you want to avoid having to queue or miss your opportunity for New Zealand heli skiing Queenstown.
The school holiday in the main ski season will run for two weeks in early July. This will have an big impact on the length of queues for hire of equipment, facilities, and lifts.
See my pages on public holiday dates and visit the NZ Ministry of Education web site for the school holidays dates for coming years.
Skiers on New Zealand heli skiing Queenstown holidays can transport to the ski slopes from nearby towns and can hire ski equipment and gear from outlets in town or on the ski fields.
If you are concerned about having to transport loads of equipment on your international flight to NZ, you needn't worry because you will be able to hire everything you need when you get there.
However, remember that in the busy season it is advised to book your equipment hire in advance, particularly during the school vacation period. Local skiers will most likely have their own equipment.
