New Zealand heli skiing Wanaka locations are among the most popular ski and heliski destinations for winter sports vacations. Including; heliski, snow boarding, and ski holidays.
There are various NZ heli ski operators in this region that are a popular choice for national and international snow enthusiasts of these sports.
Suitable ski and snowboard locations can be found both in the North and South islands with the area around Wanaka and Queenstown (South Island) being popular to heli ski.
Heliskiing in NZ is an excellent way to get your ski or snowboarding fix while in a spectacular landscape providing some of the most unusual and stunning scenery anywhere in the world... heliskiing is also the best way to avoid the queues at the most popular resorts in the height of the season!
If your budget stretches to being able to afford to be transported to the tops of the ski fields, there is no doubt that you'll have an experience of a lifetime. And that is what life is all about!
The most popular and largest concentration of commercial Heli-skiing fields are found around the Wanaka and Queenstown region.
These New Zealand heli skiing Wanaka fields are to be considered some of the favourite locations to get your ski, heliski, or snowboard fix in NZ.
Although, because these regions are more popular, they may also be more expensive than the less popular areas.
Heliskiiers on a tighter budget should consider less expensive fields, that are also growing in popularity, in other regions.
Cardrona, Treble Cone, and the Waiorau Nordic Ski Area are all located in the Wanaka region.
The Coronet Peak and the Remarkables Range are in the Queenstown which is not far from Wanaka and can easily be included in your vacation.
Other South Island regions for heli-skiing are Mt Aspiring and the Mt Cook Mackenzie region. Canterbury is an additional South Island region where you can also find back country heli-skiing with at least two companies providing the services.
Not to forget the North Island, the Mt Ruapehu and region in the Tongariro National Park is host to some excellent facilities for heliskiing. Main commercial ski fields at Whakapapa and Turoa on Mount Ruapehu.

Because these ski fields are southern hemisphere locations, they are ideal for skiers from the northern hemisphere due to the opposite seasons.
Seasons in NZ are the opposite which makes this the ideal location to take a holiday where you can follow your sport after the northern hemisphere resorts have closed for their summer.
The Ski season in NZ runs through from the start of July through to a minimum of early October. When I visited Mount Ruapehu in the Tongariro National Park North Island, in late October there was still time to get a last ski in at Whakapapa and Turoa before the end of the ski season. We watched a steady flow of skiers making the most of the opportunity with the last snow fall of the season.
If your heliski vacation is absolutely dependent on there being an abundance of snow, be aware that the season can sometimes end early. So be sure to make holiday bookings in the main ski season months of July, August, and September.
It is also advisable to consider taking your New Zealand heli skiing Wanaka holiday when there are no school holidays in NZ. I have pages on all the public holidays for the next few years, so be sure to look those up before you book. I have covered the public holidays and the Ministry of Education NZ web site provides dates for the school holidays for each future year.
You can commute to the ski slopes and hire your gear from outlets in the region for New Zealand Heli Skiing Wanaka.
Hire equipment will include everything your need from ski and snow boarding gear for high performance to sets of all the equipment you will need for a good day on the slopes.
There is no need to be too concerned about taking all your ski equipment with you on international travel, but do keep it in mind that in the high season it is advisable to book in advance. This is particularly relevant in the school vacation period. This doesn't apply if you are a local ski enthusiast who has your own gear.
